World Environment Day: A Call to Action for a Healthier Planet

United Nations Day for Environmental Awareness

Every year on June 5th, the United Nations marks World Environment Day (WED) to raise global awareness and inspire positive action towards protecting our precious environment.

A Global Platform for Change

WED has become a powerful platform for the United Nations, bringing together over 150 countries and countless individuals to work towards a common goal: safeguarding the health and well-being of our planet.

A Legacy of Environmental Protection

WED was first designated by the United Nations in 1973 to emphasize the vital importance of environmental protection. Since then, it has served as an annual reminder of our responsibility to preserve our natural resources and mitigate threats to our ecosystem.

Inspiring Awareness and Action

WED aims to inspire individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide to take concrete actions to protect the environment. It encourages a sense of urgency and fosters a global dialogue on critical environmental issues, ranging from climate change to biodiversity loss.

Led by the UN Environment Programme

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads WED, coordinating efforts and supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development and protect the environment.
